Model railroaders have often imagined themselves in the cab of their favorite steam locomotive driving a train through their layout. This article enables a modeler to take another step in that direction. It describes the construction of an operating steam locomotive throttle which connects directly to a JMRI WiFi server, or a DCC-EX WiFi server, or any DCC WiFi server that supports the JMRI WiFi protocol. It is not dependent on your DCC base station connected to JMRI. It will support DCC address selection, function switches, speed and direction control, running on four standard AA batteries. Its controls mimic the throttle bar, Johnson bar, whistle pull, and brake levers found in many steam locomotive cabs, and have been built to interact with one another, the boiler steam gauge, and water level sight glass often found in the cab. It enhances your operating experience by focusing on activities and sounds extant in a prototype steam locomotive cab. While providing basic throttle functions, it can be customized and expanded by the inventive modeler to perform other functions, or change the interactions as you wish. It uses readily available parts, and provides all the information for you to fabricate your own boiler backhead/case, enhancing the experience.
